New hire series

I am going to be writing a series of blogs targeted at helping people that are new to the business world.  Academia is an extremely valuable experience for most people, more so for the people who try to get the most out of it.  Unfortunately the environment and rules tend to be drastically different than the workplace.  This can lead to a person spinning their wheels and feeling pretty lost when they start a job.  Don’t worry it is natural.  You’ve experienced this feeling before and you will probably experience it again.  I am going to talk through a number of things you can do to get your bearings and start growing quickly.

Remember, you are a smart person, capable of amazing things.  You were hired because someone saw skill or potential to fill a need.  You now have your opportunity to show what you can do and learn a bunch of job and life skills along the way.  Every new job is an opportunity.  Every new project a chance to learn and grow.  Best case you find something you love and can make a career out of.  Worst case, you learn what you don’t want to do and move on to something else.

What ever it is, just get in and get started.  There is no point in waiting for life to hand you a freebie.  Go out there and get it.
