Kindle eReader
If you have read my about page you would know that I am an IT consultant for one of the Big Four consulting firms. That means I travel on planes nearly every week. This give me a good deal of time to read while waiting in airports or on planes. I would carry 1-2 books with me at all times to read and enjoy during this down time. This worked well for me but I always had downtime between books as I didn’t always have time to go to the library or bookstore to pick up my next book.
I started reading books on my iTouch, iPad, and Android Incredible phone using the Kindle app. This worked “ok” but was not an enjoyable experience. I spend all day staring at computer screens and the backlighting on the screen was straining my eyes. Also, on the iTouch and Android Incredible I spent half the time flipping pages (great feeling of accomplishment, but I quickly tired of it). The iPad was also decent experience, but the backlighting was still a problem for me.
For about 6 months I toyed with the idea of purchasing a Kindle. The price was great at $139, and the size seemed about right, but I wasn’t sure I would use it much or enjoy it. That was, until I saw my friends Kindle and tested it out. The weight was great, the ease of use was superb, and the size was perfect for my laptop bag. Not to mention the battery lasts for weeks. I am now reading on it nearly every day and couldn’t be happier. For anyone who enjoys reading, this device is an excellent purchase which I highly recommend.
My personal preference is for the baseline $139 model. 3G is nice, but you can get on most wifi hotspots with the baseline model. With very little planning ahead, you are never without a book, making 3G a feature you may use a handful of times at most.
